Lima, Peru Hostel Review-Albergue Verde

by Adam Seper on August 19, 2010

Lima Coastline

The Lima coastline is just a short walk from Albergue Verde

Albergue Verde

Address: Grimaldo del Solar 459, located in Miraflores -

Cost: $25US/night, double room, private bath, including breakfast.

A glimpse of our room inside the Albergue Verde

Layout: Albergue Verde was a pretty small place with both private and dorm rooms.  The common area and kitchen are both pretty small as well, but there is enough room to move around.  I’ve certainly seen smaller. The rooms were fine, kind of small, a little dank, not the cleanest, but I wouldn’t call them dirty either.  We’ve certainly stayed in better, and we’ve certainly stayed in worse.  Whatever aesthetic appeal was missing was made up for in service.  The entire staff was friendly (not many spoke English), and the owner, Arturo, was a delight.

Breakfast: It was a normal hostel breakfast, consisting of several different types of bread and rolls with butter and jam.  There was plenty of coffee (Nescafe) and several different types of tea.  The bread and roll options were pretty good and were definitely better than the usual white/wheat bread options available at some hostels.

Amenities/Computer Access: Obviously breakfast was included, and the Albergue Verde also had one computer and wireless throughout the hostel, both of which were free.  The access and speed were normal for South America, which is to say rather slow, but still possible to upload pictures.

Hospitality: Lima was our first stop on our RTW, so we were totally green while here.  Arturo, the owner, sat down with us for over an hour and chatted with us about what he recommended not only for Lima, but for Peru and the rest of South America.  He even drew a little map and outlined possible itineraries for us.  The rest of the staff didn’t speak much English, but they were very patient with our Spanish, and they didn’t let the language barrier stop them from being extremely friendly and as helpful as humanly possible.  The location was great, it was laid back, and I definitely recommend it.
