Photo Post: Perito Moreno Glacier

by Adam Seper on December 2, 2010

Our most recent post broke down everything you need to know about visiting Perito Moreno Glacier.  While helpful information is always good, pretty pictures are even better.  One tip for anyone visiting Perito Moreno is to keep your video camera running if you have one.

One of the most impressive parts of visiting the glacier is seeing and hearing the thunderous sound of icebergs calving from the face of the glacier.  Seeing and hearing this in person is absolutely amazing, and capturing it on video is a stroke of luck.  But if you are able to, you’ll be very thankful to revisit the sights and sounds.

Without further ado, here’s a collection of our favorite pictures and videos from our day at Perito Moreno Glacier.

To get an idea of the size, check out the boat on the right. It is a catamaran that holds up to 250 people.

One of my favorite parts-the deep blue ice

Catching the calving was also a major highlight

We were lucky enough to rolling video when the largest chunk of ice we saw all day fell of the face of the glacier.  We were on the boat and pretty close, and it was an amazing experience.  Because of the infamous Patagonian wind, the sound doesn’t come through as vividly as in person, but it’s still pretty awesome.  Enjoy!

Breathtaking photos! I also had no idea it would be so loud, I thought it would have just been some creaking/cracking sounds – very cool!

gorgeous!!! and i totally get what you mean about needing to be there to hear the sound- that it is indescribable- felt that way about Iguazu too. i usually follow warmth, but after seeing these, i think i may just have to bundle up and get my butt there :)

Awesome photos, and like you mentioned, the deep blue ice was spectacular. I remember the wind whipping off the glacier into my face! It was cold!

Lorna, if you get there in the summer it's not quite as cold. It's not warm, but it isn't as cold as it looks.

And the sound on the video is nothing compared to being there. As it got later in the day, it happened more and more often, and while on the walkways you'd just hear everyone cheer and clap and stand in awe. It was great.
