Punta Tombo Picture and Video Post

Lots of penguins, Punta Tombo, Patagonia, Argentina

Once tourists are deep in the park, penguins are everywhere!

Punta Tombo, the largest single penguin colony in the South American subcontinent, is a wonderful place to visit to interact with these adorable little creatures.  Be sure to check out all you need to know about visiting this reserve on the Punta Tombo page.

The following are a collection of our favorite photos and videos of our day visiting Punta Tombo.  Enjoy!

Many were just lying around, being lazy, without a worry in the world.  They couldn’t care less how many people were walking around them.

Once in the park, there were more and more penguins around, and not many seemed like they even noticed us.

At one point, there was a stand off.

And who knew they could make so much damn noise?

Getting a panorama of the area was impressive and showed just how many penguins there were.

Our favorite part of the day was without a doubt watching them swim.

    Adam,

Omigosh….a real life “Happy Feet”! I love it! They are so precious….I would have probably wanted to take one home.

  2. Haha, we definitely wanted to throw one in our pack and take it home with us. They were freaking adorable, and it was a very memorable day. Thanks so much for commenting!

  3. Cute, cute, cute!!! I really don't know how anyone can look at a penguin and not go 'Aaawww' from the cuteness overload.

  4. I love penguins, but I've only ever seen them at the zoo. How great to visit them like this. Enjoyed your photos and video very much. Big smile on my face. :-)

  5. They are lovely. Do you know what type of penguins they are? Magellanic penguins?

  6. Cute little guys ;-)

I just recently had a similarly windy experience on Kangaroo Island, Australia. With sea lions and cute Koalas, though…

I posted a few photos on my travel blog travelmemo.com

    • Thanks for sharing Walter, I'll definitely check out your site. We haven't had the chance to hang out with koalas and sea lions. I bet they are equally as impressive.

  7. I've only ever seen these little guys at the zoo too. Oh I need to go to Punta Tombo.

  8. Impossible not to like penguins isn't it?

  9. They are so cute, but you are right, they make a lot of noise and they have heavy BO too. My experience with penguins stems from South Africa.

  10. I don't think I've ever seen a penguin lay down! How cute!

It reminds me of the Philip Island Penguin show in near Melbourne where you can watch them come in and next for the night (or week) they are adorable!

    • They were all so funny, Annie! They were just doing their thing, regardless of what all the people around them were doing. Totally oblivious most of the time.

  11. Wow! I'm so jealous and great photos, they're adorable! I had no ideas penguins were so loud either.

aahhh! we're going to Punta Tombo too! We're staying in Puerto Madryn…did you use a tour company? If so, can you recommend the one you used…thanks so much!

    • We did not use a tour company. We actually stayed in Trelew, a town about an hour away from Puerto Madryn (and closer to Punta Tombo). After looking at tour companies and different ways to get there, we found that it was pretty much the same price to rent a car and drive ourselves. It worked out great because we weren't on a schedule and could stay as long as we wanted. Check out these two pages for more information:

Awesome ! Thank you!  WE will be going on a cruise in Dec/Jan and will be in Puerto Madryn on New Year’s Day…hoping to get a tour to Punta Tombo. Do you recall seeing anything about them being closed on Holidays ?  These adorable animals are just too cute to miss ! Can you judge about how far you walked from the entrance down to the beach area? Are there benches along the way to rest if needed?  We are in our mid 70′s and have some joint issues that prevent extensive walking. Thanks! Ruth
