Recoleta Cemetery (in pictures)

by Adam Seper on November 18, 2010

A highlight of any trip to Buenos Aires is a visit to Recoleta Cemetery.  While cemeteries aren’t usually the most appealing of places to visit, this one is quite different.  Recoleta Cemetery is a city within a city, with streets and alleyways winding throughout the massive, ornate mausoleums.  Many famous Argentines (including Eva Peron) are buried here, and it’s fascinating to stroll around and check out the myriad of different architectural styles evident.  This place is a photographer’s dream, and it’s easy to spend an entire afternoon sauntering around taking photos.

So without further ado, I’ll let the pictures do the talking here.

The 4th to last photo is awesome, the way the clouds are sitting behind!

Isn't the Recoleta Cemetery magical? It seems so weird to think of a cemetery as a tourist attraction, but I had the best time wandering around there too. One of my favorite crypts had a statue of a woman and her dog on it–i guess they were buried together! Anyways, beautiful photos!

Looks like a fascinating place! I actually like visiting cemeteries if they're old, unique, beautiful, or historical. I'd love to see Recoleta.

Yeah, it was pretty cool. Very similar to cemeteries in New Orleans, but much, much bigger. I am the same when it comes to cemeteries. If they're unique, I want to see them.

Thanks so much, Michael. It was a fascinating and magical place. We spent tons of time there just wandering around. The ornateness of all the mausoleums was so cool. Love a woman and her dog. Hilarious! Thanks for commenting.

Thanks Ayngelina. It is a great place to take pictures, for sure. A playground for photographers. Wish we would have gotten there a bit earlier in the day when the light was better, but it was still amazing, and I think we came out with some good shots.

Why thanks, Poi. I love that one, too. A personal favorite of mine. When I was scrolling through this morning after your comment, my wife looked over my shoulder and said, “I love that one with the clouds behind it.” I had to laugh because I was coming back to check out which one you were talking about.

Thanks for the comment. Looks like you two are having a great time!

Gorgeous, gorgeous photos of one of my favorite places in BsAs. I've visited 3X!

Thanks! I'm actually kind of annoyed that we only went there once during our month in BsAs.

Something to look forward to when you return! :)
